Background Information
on the Coordinator and Project Partners

The Coordinator:

Univerzita Karlova v Praze, Pedagogická fakulta, Czech Republic

The Faculty of Education, Charles University Prague, is one of the main providers for teacher education within the Czech Republic. It is also the main centre for research work in mathematical education with a considerable number of successful PhD students each year. Members of the Mathematics and Mathematical Education Department have experience of teaching in primary and secondary schools together with the provision of in-service courses in many parts of the country. Members also have worked with teachers in other countries notably Slovakia and Poland. Recent research has led to the development of new methods of constructive teaching. For many years there has been strong international links with a considerable number of countries, particularly within Europe. Members of the department hold positions of responsibility in European and international mathematical associations.

Prof. Milan Hejny
Chairman of PhD certificate in Didactics of Mathematics, member of teacher's certificate for primary and secondary education at the Faculty of education and Faculty of Math. and Phys. of Charles University. 9 years experimental teaching at primary and secondary school. Author of several books and many articles.

University of Derby, Great Britain

University of Derby has been involved with in-service training of teachers for over 40 years. It has been responsible with the local education authority for servicing teachers' needs in the whole region. It has been a provider of teacher education for almost 150 years and during that time has developed many links with institutions overseas and particularly through Erasmus supported funding. The Mathematics and Mathematics Education Department was at the forefront of the United Kingdom's development of constructive teaching methods from the mid 1960's, and has worked at international, national, regional and local levels to bring about positive changes in the teaching of mathematics. These developments were underpinned by extensive research. 

Prof. Graham H. Littler
M Sc, B Sc. FSS, former head of the School of Education, head of the Department of Mathematics Education University Derby, teacher of mathematics in primary and secondary schools (pupils ages 7 to 19) for 9 years, total teaching experience 43 years, current position: Emeritus Professor of Education, several books and articles

Holmesskolan Torsby, Primary and secondary school, Sweden

Holmesskolan, Torsby is a primary /secondary school which is known both nationally and internationally for its innovative mathematical developments. In-service courses are organized for Swedish teachers and teacher-students from local Universities and abroad. The courses involve observing lessons, lectures and workshops. The school is also involved in a Comenius 1 project with schools in Spain, Czech Republic and Germany.

Spec-ped. Ann-Margret Johansson
Responsible for mathematics development in schools for the region. Initiated and organizes a 10-year long project "Individualised Teaching Strategies Based on Careful Diagnosis in Grades 1 - 9". Lectures and run courses internationally as well as nationally. Author of several books and articles. Awarded Swedish Prize in Mathematics from the Royal Swedish Academy in 1998.
